What is the 101 Hr challenge?
I’ve been looking forward to this challenge for roughly 3 months now…

Here’s a quick description of the challenge…
I believe we all have roughly 101 hrs in a month outside of “Work” to spend on whatever we want. Whether that’s watching Netflix, playing games, or anything that steals your focus. We get to choose how we spend those 101 hrs.
The challenge was created to influence productivity and exploration in whatever I, and hopefully you, feel like doing.
I’ve always had a list of things I wanted to learn or try but felt like I never had time to do them. Worse yet I always told myself it wasn’t worth starting since I possessed little time to begin with.
“Learning Japanese takes soooo much time… I’ll just have to wait until I’m not as busy”
No, we have the time. It might be scattered here and there, but it adds up in the end.
So get making, get trying, and get challenged!

Challenge 1 – Productivity App
The first challenge is a productivity app to make planning my day out easier.
I found an interest in daily planning after reading Deep Work, by Cal Newport. Within the book, Cal presents the idea of scheduling every minute of your day.
At first, I was a bit skeptical of trying to designate every minute of my day to a task. Though reading further he explains that it’s about chunking your days into roughly 30-minute segments and then you start to designate tasks accordingly.
Each task is given thought to whether it’s considered Deep (maximum-concentration) or Shallow (minimum-concentration) work.
Here are a few Examples of Deep and Shallow work…
Deep | Shallow |
– Preparing presentation – Reading for retention – Programming -Solving a complex problem | – Sending emails – Discussing with colleges – Attending meetings – Checking social media |
Deep work is best done when there’s a large enough block of time to get into flow state and retain focus. While shallow work can be done on off blocks or at fragmented times.
Currently, I’m using this daily technique with a whiteboard which is great, but I’m curious if I can streamline, gamify, and improve the process through an application.

At the moment I’m concentrating on learning how to develop an application using Googles Flutter API and a tutorial. Here are a few of the apps I’ve created so far…

I’m going to estimate that I’ve put roughly 35hrs into finding a suitable API and following tutorials. I look forward to starting the design phase of the productivity app and showing you all the progress!
Till then stay safe and keep creating!
